A Latest Form of Marketing on Social Media ----- Live Video Streaming

With the social media development, the role of social media in business is increasingly important. Today we are discussing a hot topic----live video.

According to the data I found online, the audience who the age between 13-40 is the main crowd watching and creating live videos, these people are also the main consumer groups in the fashion, sports, fast-moving and technology industry in the United States. Of course, not only the United States, I think most developing countries and developed countries have the same trend.

Therefore, if you can attract and master these consumers who use live video, it is the priority to occupy the commercial development. I will give two examples, Major League Baseball(MLB) and Apple company, to illustrate how the live video on social platforms will bring more possibilities to businesses and attract more viewers to increase revenue.

MLB’s YouTube live streams average 1.2m views

Major League Baseball’s (MLB) 13 games live-streamed on YouTube during this season averaged 1.2 million views, including pre and post-game shows. It follows the league’s decision to enter into an exclusive broadcast partnership with the social video platform in May to broadcast the games by YouTube TV, its cable-free live service, to subscribers in the US.

Looking at the numbers, total average minute audience across the games was 130,000. The peak concurrent viewer average was 171,000.

YouTube’s most-watched game was the St Louis Cardinals against the Los Angeles Dodgers on 7th August, which peaked at just over 320,000 live concurrent viewers. The company has not disclosed the total number of live views for the game, but the on-demand version drew almost 1.7 million views to date.

Overall on the digital front, MLB announced that subscriptions to the MLB.TV out-of-market game package rose 15 percent from 2018, while the starts for the MLB At Bat mobile app increased 18 percent in 2019. The league’s Ballpark mobile app, which is focused on ticketing and fans in-venue experiences, registered a 52 percent increase in users.

You can watch a live stream of Apple's fall event, the company has announced - but only if you're using an Apple device.

Secondly, many technology companies, such as Apple, are also using live video by social media (Facebook and YouTube) on the first line of new product launches to simultaneously promote new products in real time.

Apple company was showed to stream its iPhone 11 event on Google’s YouTube platform on Tuesday. It marked the first time that Apple had ever streamed one of the company’s events on YouTube, and it had greatly expanded the number of people able to view the stream. Last year Apple extended its iPhone event stream to Twitter, and the company has been gradually increasing the availability of its stream in recent years.

We were expecting Apple to unveil three new iPhone models on Tuesday, and The Verge had been lived from the event covering every piece of news as it happens.

What' s more, in order to adapt to the needs of users, Apple company improves the live video software functions. The HTTP live streaming protocol is a feature of the latest version of Apple's multimedia player and framework, QuickTime

Live video sales on Tuesday were very good, and sale continued to rise, not only for the iPhone 11, but also for the sale of other products around Apple. On the Internet, the comparison with Huawei products has also formed a hot topic.

  1. live video streaming is a new strategy that many people use for marketing, blogging and most importantly safety. It is more than just a tool for marketing. But for brands who have strong fan base , such as Nike, a live video streaming would be a very great strategy for marketing. Most live videos can now be replayed after 24hours. so technically no one is missing out anything.

  2. Hi Yuxi. This is an interesting topic you have chosen! When Instagram and Facebook first introduced live streams, I wondered if anyone was going to use it at all. However, I actually find myself watching many of these (especially by influencers, brand coaches and bloggers). It's also wonderful how people watching can send questions in real time and organizations are responding instantaneously. It's actually groundbreaking in terms of marketing strategy. I was just having a conversation with my employer about how everyone is a brand in today's world. Personal branding has gained so much importance, it's crazy. The launch of new Apple products is such a relevant example, thanks for sharing!
